My Feel-Good Summer Morning Routine to Stay Grounded

Summer mornings have their own kind of magic, don’t they? Something about the early cool mornings, the scent of new dew, and the anticipation of a sunny day makes getting out of bed a little bit easier.

A solid summer morning routine can make all the difference when you’re juggling work, parenting, and everything in between. As a work-from-home parent, starting my mornings with intention keeps me grounded and energized, even on chaotic days.

Here’s a peek into my real-life morning routine during the summer months—maybe it’ll inspire you to create one that feels just as good for you.

Start the Day With Purpose

During the summer, I like to wake up around the same time as the school year. My family, especially my kids, tends to sleep in, so waking up at this time is ideal for me. This is my quiet time, and even though it’s tempting to hit snooze, I always thank myself later for those extra moments of peace.

My home office is located in a walk-in closet where I like to spend a few minutes sitting in my office after getting up. After that, I check my planner to see what I have planned for the day and whether I need to add any last-minute notes or activities.

Some days, I enjoy journaling quietly for 5 to 10 minutes. Putting my thoughts down on paper helps me understand how I feel and the reasons behind it. It helps me be more mindful of myself and others as I navigate my day.

I encourage you to find something that will help ground you in the mornings. You can take a peaceful bath, recite some affirmations, or journal quietly. Do something to help you clear your mind and prepare you to tackle the day ahead.

A Morning Walk

After the kids are ready for the day and settled, I lace up my sneakers, leash up our dog, and head out for a brisk morning walk. In the summer, it’s important to get moving before the heat of the day sets in, and a morning walk is the perfect solution.

Ever since I started working from home, my physical movement has been significantly reduced. I realized my body was getting stiffer, and it took me longer to motivate myself for anything.

Getting my heart pumping definitely helps me wake up mentally and encourages me to be present. I get to enjoy the early summer beauty before everything gets busy. The birds are chirping, and the clear sky is so blue, and it’s just me, my dog, and the open path before us.

That walk is such a crucial part of my summer morning routine because it re-energizes me—physically and mentally—for the workday ahead.

Have a Good Skincare Routine

My summer morning routine for self-care is no different from my regular routine. This routine is a non-negotiable.

Before the morning rush hits full force, I carve out about an hour for some self-care. I’ve learned to give myself grace and not rush this process because it’s supposed to help me, not stress me out.

  1. Morning Yoga Stretch: I roll out my yoga mat and do a few gentle stretches or a short yoga flow. Nothing fancy — just enough to get my blood moving and loosen up any stiffness. Some days, I will throw in some cardio or pilates if I have time.
  2. A Cold Rinse: After working out, I like to jump into the shower right away. I do a cold rinse after a normal hot shower. This is to help shrink my pores (I have bad pores and blackheads), and it helps me build endurance.
  3. Skincare: With a cold rinse, my pores are ready for my skincare routine. My routine includes applying toner, blemish-correcting and anti-aging serum, eye cream, and moisturizer. Depending on what I can afford, sometimes I will add a vitamin-C serum or CC-cream after moisturizing.

Sunscreen is extremely important, especially since I live in Georgia. My moisturizer comes with 30 SPF to offer some protection from the sun. Even if I’m just working from home, the summer sun finds its way through the window in my walk-in closet, and protecting my skin has become a must.

Let in that Morning Summer Light

One of my favorite parts of my summer mornings is opening up the windows. As I enter a room, I always start by opening a window to let in that crisp morning air—it’s such a simple thing, but it instantly clears out the stale feeling and makes the whole house feel alive again. That fresh dew and the earthy scent of summer mornings are one of those simple pleasures that make getting up early feel totally worth it.

Sometimes I’ll even sit by the open window with my coffee or tea for a few minutes before the day gets going, just soaking it in. It’s such a grounding moment and allows me to slow down and appreciate the little things.

The Kids’ Morning Routines for Summer

Once I’ve had my few moments of peace, it’s time to shift into full-on “Mom Mode.” My two older kids are 10 and 9 years old, and they have their own morning routines that they follow. So, that alone makes the mornings a lot easier to manage. The sooner you teach your kids to be independent, the easier your day will be. I can focus more on taking care of my two younger kids.

Each of my kids has their own strong personalities, so personalizing a morning routine for them makes it easier for me, too. My youngest likes to shower first thing in the morning, and my second youngest likes to hydrate with a glass of milk after using the bathroom.

I encourage you to know your kids and learn what works for them. Every morning has its challenges, but a good routine will help make things easier.

Why Bother with a Summer Morning Routine?

When you’re trying to balance work, kids, and home life constantly, having a steady summer morning routine can set you up for success. If not success, then at least you’re in the right mindset to take on any challenge. I cannot stress how much this has reduced my parental burnout

And, what I mean is when you take the time to move your body, hydrate, connect with nature, and care for yourself, you start the day feeling empowered rather than overwhelmed. It’s the difference between reacting to your day and intentionally stepping into it.

Start Making Time for Yourself

Creating space for a summer morning routine has truly changed the way my days unfold—not just for me, but for my whole family. When I take even a little time in the morning to move my body, hydrate, breathe in fresh air, and center myself, I feel more grounded, patient, and present. That calm energy naturally spills over into how I show up for my kids and my husband. They feel it, too.

I know it’s not always easy to carve out time, especially in a busy household during the summer. But even five or ten minutes of intentional care in the morning can shift your whole day. Whether it’s a quiet moment by sitting on your porch, a quick stretch, or hopping in the shower for a quick rinse, these small acts of self-care add up.

If you’re a parent juggling a lot right now, I encourage you to give yourself permission to make time for yourself. A summer morning routine focuses on starting the day feeling good. And when we feel better, we are better parents and we perform at work better. It’s a win for everyone.
